America’s Least Favorite Idol- The Sanjaya Effect

Simon Cowell has claimed that should Sanjaya win American Idol he will quit the program. I say hallelujah. But seriously, have you guys listened to this Sanjaya guy? Ick. How did he even make it to Hollywood? Do you know about this controversy? This is what I’ve learned from listening to my favorite radio station.

On March 19, 2007 Howard Stern announced on his Sirius Satallite Radio show that he had launched a campaign for his listeners to vote for Sajaya to win. In addition to Stern’s campaign there’s which has chosen Sanjaya as their no. 1 bad pick. It seems like the cynical side of America would like to prove that American Idol voting is no science, a claim which is fueled by the mixed success of past contestants. Clay Aiken has been much more successful than the winner of his season, Ruben Studdard. Similarly Chris Daughtry has a no. 1 single and platinum record whereas Taylor Hicks has gray hair and a few TV commercials.

But are Stern and his friends in the wrong for voting a loser to win? They are American’s after all, so if their idol is an Indian kick with bad hair who can’t sing then shouldn’t they get to vote for him? says, “During the initial auditions, the producers of Idol only let certain people through. Many good people are turned away and many bad singers are kept around to see Simon, Paula, and Randy so that
America will be entertained. Now why do the producers do this? It’s simple: American Idol is not about singing at all, it’s about making good reality TV and enjoying the cheesy, guilty pleasure of watching bad singing.”

  1. Yes, the voting is flawed, powervoting does not translate to CD sales. But isn’t it cruel to the contestant? Even if Sanjaya wins, just like Taylor, his CD will flop and he will be another failure.

  2. It is cruel to the contestant! Being the object of this sick power trip of Howard Stern could mess the kid’s head up forever! OMG… he might become a Howard Stern listener if it screws him up bad enough!!!! America needs to show the perpetrators of this tacky joke that we have phones too! Call in and vote now or we all share in the blame for sitting back and letting it happen!

  3. It all starts with the judges. They are truly responsible for letting Sanjaya into the hollywood mix. Now they need to get him out of there before America plays another cruel joke. This kid knows how bad he is, he smirks when he makes it through. Please someone do something…
